The 2017 BIO International Convention got off to a fast, fun and early start on Monday with an 8 a.m. 5K fun run/walk on San Diego Bay.
More than 300 enjoyed a beautiful San Diego morning, with the temperature approaching 70 degrees at the 8 a.m. start. The flat, picturesque route went past Seaport Village, the Midway Museum and made U-turn at the foot of Broadway by the Cruise Ship Terminal to return to the Start/Finish line by Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Prizes were awarded to participants with the most colorful, craziest costumes. One costumed winner: a big turkey.
The biggest winner: BIO presented a check for $15,000 to Fisher House Foundation, which is a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.
The original Fisher House at the Naval Medical Center San Diego opened in 1992 with just eight bedrooms. It has grown over the years into a place that helps thousands of families be close to their loved ones and not worry about the cost of housing or a hotel room. Joanne Duncan, president of membership and business operations for BIO, and Dr. Steven Mento, president and CEO of Conatus Pharmaceuticals and chairman of the San Diego steering committee, presented the check before the start of the race.
