As we know that biotechnology is the latest scientific innovation that show great economic promises... The scientific developments in biotech are exciting in the likely economic value to society. But the observations where public/communities have shown slow no uptake need to be address.

Bill's right, the biggest whiners are those in rich countries that don't see starvation on a daily basis and who continue to pollute the environment. wealthier nations need to provide a solution to world issues while we still can. Spending trillions annually on broke companies during the global financial crisis is wasted money.

Timely post George... I wanted to let you know that Sen. Sherrod Brown was with BioOhio in Cincinnati a couple weeks ago to visit Cincinnati State, one of the community colleges in Ohio we're helping deliver biomedical training and curriculum to the under- and unemployed. TV, radio, and print coverage here: http://www.microhscope.com/?p=3255.

The historically low percentage of first round deals combined with the historically high average size of those first round deals tells an interesting story. My sense is the data signals investment at marginally later stages (greater first round valuation, more money required to complete next phase). Another argument may be that deals are only happening when there's enough capital to support a long runway - perhaps a product of a perceived tight financing environment?

Either case implies startups need to focus on lean/efficient operations from the earliest stage - either to deliver more data or to differentiate from the crowd to become of the chosen few funded.

LifeSciVC also has a great post on the topic.

Nice breakdown in different myths. I have to accept that myth 2 about organic food and myth 3 about organic farming came out as shocks for me. And I understand that it is totally normal for a common thinker like me which have wrong delusions about these.

Yes, there is a greater need for awaking people on what they think of things like organic foods and farming (as once I thought before reading it).

Great article! It is absolutely true that overall progress in the world depends on the existence of economic and public policies that support research and development leading to innovation.
