From Jim Greenwood: Things are humming in Atlanta

I arrived Thursday to begin the pre-conference media interviews and to speak at some events that precede the convention like the Association of University Research Parks, the Council of State Bioscience Associations and the Biotechnology Institute. The Institute presented its teacher of the Year award and honors the BioGenius students. It’s always inspiring to meet the next generation of biotech researchers.

Early this morning I had the honor of doing a live interview on the FOX Business show with former UN Ambassador and former Atlanta Mayor, Andrew Young. He was the keynote speaker today at BIO’s Leadership Summit.

Today was also the day for the BIO Board and our section governing body meetings. BIO Chairman, Dr. Joshua Boger, handed the gavel to our incoming Chair Dr. Stephen Sherwin. Josh has been a fabulous Chair. The only reason we’re not all in mourning over the end of his term is that we know that Stephen Sherwin will do an terrific job as well.

He’ll need to, because between patent reform biosimilars, health care reform, comparative effectiveness, bio-fuels policy and GMO and cloning labeling bills we have our advocacy work cut out for us right in the midst of the worst economic recession.

After an interview with a New York Times reporter, we’re off to the Board reception and the Opening reception. The latter will take place in the Georgia Dome with entertainment by the B-52′s. Just three or four thousand biotechies rockin’ away the night!
