The Biotechnology Industry Organization’s (BIO)’s 2013 Pacific Rim Summit on Biotechnology and Bioenergy will be showcasing several distinctive presentations on recent innovations in using synthetic biology for renewable chemicals and algae biofuels. This year’s summit will be co-organized by BIOCOM and held in San Diego, California from December 8-11, 2013 at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter.
In a recent press release, BIO announced that the Pacific Rim Summit will offer a complete track of breakout sessions on the topics of Synthetic Biology, Algae and Marine Biotechnology. These sessions will discuss how advances in technology have allowed researchers to control DNA, making it easier to engineer cells to the desired end point; how recent progress in the understanding of the biological circuitry of algae and cyanobacteria has led to effective application of technologies used for food, feed, and medicine; and how the use of native biosynthetic pathways can achieve an increase of yields of desired products, such as renewable chemicals.
Speakers featured in the breakout sessions come from the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Washington at Seattle, the Heifetz BioConsulting, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Matrix Genetics, Inc, Amyris, Jiangnan University, Kiverdi and the Institute of Process Engineering, CAS.
