This week, scientists announced that they have cleared HIV in a Long Beach, Calif.-baby who doctors confirmed was infected with the virus at the time of birth.
Last year, doctors reported that a baby in Mississippi had been cleared of the virus after receiving aggressive drug treatment 30 hours after birth.
The most recent announcement is particularly significant because the latest baby was confirmed to have the virus and doctors immediately started the baby on three drugs – AZT, 3TC and nevirapine.
A clinical trial in which up to 60 babies who are born infected will be put on drugs within 48 hours is set to begin soon.
