New Studies Question Cellulosic Biofuels
A new study from MIT’s Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change examines what it calls the Unintended Environmental Consequences of a Global Biofuels Program. Unintended consequences seems to be the watchword of the year. The authors posit that there will be a feedback loop from climate change and policies that promote biofuels to address it. Climate change itself will affect the productivity of land, shifting agricultural production to new areas, and Read More >
This Week in Science
A group of preeminent academics put forward a policy proposal on regulating the development of cellulosic biofuels in the pages of Science magazine last week. They point out the urgent need to think about the unintended consequences of alternative fuels in order to achieve outcomes that are substantially better than “business as usual.” They conclude: Legislated environmental performance standards for cellulosic ethanol production could, for example, go far towards promoting sustainable outcomes. Such standards could Read More >

Fuel and the Future: The Future is Not Perfect, But It's Pretty Close
Just this month IEA Bioenergy, released a report called, “Status and outlook for biofuels, other alternative fuels and new vehicles. The report presents an outlook for alternative fuels and motor vehicles. The time period covered extends up to 2030. For anyone who has paid the slightest bit of attention to the news recently, you know that fuel, particularly as it pertains to transportation is becoming more and more critical. And for each of us who Read More >
The Truth is Out There
The journal Science published two papers: Use of U.S. Croplands for Biofuels Increases Greenhouse Gases Through Emissions from Land Use Change Land Clearing and the Biofuel Carbon Debt in their online, early publication ScienceXpress that suggest that the production and use of biofuels may be worse for climate change than gasoline. The study and papers argue that cultivating more land to produce biofuels will create a “carbon debt” that has to be repaid. The conclusion Read More >
