Controversy on Discounting Greenhouse Gas Emissions
On March 13, Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) along with 10 others sent a new letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson urging “EPA to refrain from including any calculations of the ILUC components in determining life-cycle GHG emissions for biofuels at this time.” The new letter referenced a letter sent in November to then-Administrator Stephen Johnson, which was signed by four of the current 12 signers as well as then Sen. (now Read More >

New Studies Support Cellulosic Ethanol
A team of researchers led by Jason Hill and David Tilman at the University of Minnesota have published an interesting assessment of the health costs of both greenhouse gas and fine particulate matter from corn ethanol, gasoline and cellulosic ethanol. The study is available in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences early release for Feb. 10. The conclusion is favorable to cellulosic ethanol: The benefits of shifting from gasoline and the current generation Read More >

Biofuels Are a Priority Says USDA's Tom Vilsack
Today, USDA’s new Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack discussed his priorities in a conference call with reporters across the country. Two of those priorities? You guessed, biofuels and climate change. The priorities as listed in a statement relased today by the USDA are: 1. Advancing research and development and pursuing opportunities to support the development of biofuels, wind power, and other renewable energy sources, saying that USDA needs to make sure that the biofuels industry has Read More >
Comparing Energy Sources
Stanford University Professor Mark Z. Jacobson recently published a new paper in the journal Energy & Environmental Science, “Review of solutions to global warming, air pollution, and energy security.” According to Stanford News Writer Louis Bergeron, Jacobson has conducted the first quantitative, scientific evaluation of the proposed, major, energy-related solutions by assessing not only their potential for delivering energy for electricity and vehicles, but also their impacts on global warming, human health, energy security, water Read More >

Yes, Virginia
One of the most strikingly circular arguments put forward to support inclusion of current estimates of indirect land use change emissions in both California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard and the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard Life Cycle Assessment is that these estimates are so large. The University of California Berkeley Letter to EPA from Michael O’Hare et al. and the previous letter to California’s Air Resources Board by the same group (Mark Delucchi et al.) are Read More >
