Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported on The Measles Outbreak Coming Near You. Today we’re learning about another outbreak of a vaccine-preventable illness, this time hitting the National Hockey League. MyFoxNY reports that a mumps outbreak is affecting several NHL teams, with at least 9 players infected since November, five of them with the Minnesota Wild Wings. This past weekend, Michaeleen Doucleff at NPR’s Shots blog shared a fascinating but disturbing map from the Council on Foreign Relations, How Vaccine Fears Fueled The Resurgence Of Preventable Diseases. The map covers 2008-2013 and shows outbreaks of measles, mumps, rubella, polio, whooping cough, and other diseases that are preventable with vaccines.
