Thoughts on the President’s State of the Union
I had several thoughts watching President Obama’s State of the Union Address tonight. First, we at BIO remain concerned about the possible impact that sequestration may have – specifically the potential impact it may have on human health. There are millions of patients – all hopeful that new treatments will become available soon. Our fear is that sequestration may impact the ability of those patients to access new treatments in a timely manner. That fear Read More >
A Call to Arms for Renewable Fuels
BIO President & CEO Jim Greenwood delivered remarks on the Renewable Fuel Standard and participated in a panel session on the Legacy of Bipartisan Support for Renewable Energy at ACORE’s National Renewable Energy Policy Forum, held on Capitol Hill: Good afternoon. It is good to be with ACORE again and to be part of your 10th annual policy forum. I had the pleasure of speaking at the RETECH 2012 conference in October. I said then Read More >
BIO’s Pacific Rim Summit to Focus on Building the Biobased Economy
BIO’s 2012 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy comes to Vancouver, Canada next week, October 9-12. Now in its 7th year, the Summit will explore the latest issues in industrial biotechnology, including algae, advanced biofuels, biopolymers and bioplastics, dedicated energy crops, green chemistry, and synthetic biology. “We are excited to bring this conference to Vancouver to highlight the industry’s growth, particularly in Canada,” said Brent Erickson, executive vice president for BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Read More >
BIO submits comments on Australian Senate Patent Amendment
The Australian Senate has proposed the Patent Amendment (Human Genes and Biological Materials) Bill 2010 that aims to ban ’gene patents’. From the BIO Submission to Australian Senate Legal Committee on Patent Amendment: This amendment would exclude from patent protection “any” biological material, whether a human gene or otherwise, that is substantially identical to a naturally-occuring biological material. Specifically, the amendment states that the following materials would be catergorically declared unpatentable: “biological materials including their components Read More >

Discounting the Future of Biofuels
It appears that global leaders’ faith in energy technologies that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to oil is waning, particularly for biofuels, as reported in GreenInc. Respondents to the survey, which included 1,000 environmental experts, ranked energy conservation and efficiency technologies as having the greatest potential impact, both short- and long-term. Some 44 percent of respondents also said they expect that the current economic crisis will hinder progress toward an effective international climate agreement. Read More >
