Discounting the Future of Biofuels

It appears that global leaders’ faith in energy technologies that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to oil is waning, particularly for biofuels, as reported in GreenInc. Respondents to the survey, which included 1,000 environmental experts, ranked energy conservation and efficiency technologies as having the greatest potential impact, both short- and long-term. Some 44 percent of respondents also said they expect that the current economic crisis will hinder progress toward an effective international climate agreement. Read More >

Senators Weigh In on EPA Rules

On Monday Nov. 17, six U.S. Senators sent a new letter to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson echoing a proposal that BIO previously made. BIO earlier called on EPA to release its proposed methodology for measuring greenhouse gas emissions during the rule’s comment period, but withholding conclusions on specific levels of reductions achieved by particular biofuels until the methodology was complete. The Senators’ letter states: The methodology ultimately used by EPA in crafting this program will Read More >

EPA Drafting Rules on International Land Use Change

The U.S. EPA is expected to release a proposed rulemaking for implementing the lifecycle analysis requirements for biofuels under the renewable fuels standard. (Check out the EPA’s official blog, even though it contains no posts on this subject.) Estimating the emissions generated through the production of biofuels has been controversial, particularly with respect to how land-use changes affect emissions. E&E TV’s OnPoint recently interviewed Jack Huttner, vice president of Dupont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol, about the Read More >

Does Oil Cause Indirect Land Use Change?

I’ve been paying a lot of attention recently to new analyses attempting to model carbon emissions from indirect land use change, which is the conversion of land needed to maintain an international balance of supply and demand for agricultural crops, an effect that is heavily determined by crop prices. These new analyses raise a question about the existing assumption that oil has zero effect on land use change. Tim Searchinger, the lead author of one Read More >
