Cancer Stem Cell Therapy: Real Or Just Hype?
Also known as tumor-initiating cells, cancer stem cells (CSC) have unique capability endemic to stem cells of self-renewal and differentiation, thereby causing tumor relapse and/or metastatis. While traditional cancer treatments focus on tumor shrinkage, it’s a distinct possibility that these agents do not effectively destroy all of the CSCs, causing the tumor to reappear. The CSC theory is relatively new, so the treatment pipeline is still in its early stages. Nathan Sadeghi-Nejad, a contributor to Read More >
Moving Beyond the Stem Cell Stalemate

Werner, Alliance for Regenerative Medicine For the past several years, attendees at the World Stem Cell Summit have focused their energies primarily on legislative and legal efforts to protect human embryonic stem cell research. When folks gather at this year’s meeting, they will once again confront the reality that research opponents will continue to try to block these efforts. James Sherley has filed an appeal to the US Court of Appeals, DC Circuit Read More >

Biotechnology Patenting in Europe Event
BIO hosted a Biotechnology Patenting in Europe event last week here at BIO’s offices where attorneys from Carpmaels and Ransford addressed various issues of interest to U.S. biotechnology companies. Huw Halleybone discussed the relative challenges of patent harmonization in Europe quoting some reports that indicate that the cost of a European patent is 10 times the amount of the United States. Most of this cost is mainly due to language translation requirements and renewal fees. Read More >
Scientists oppose European stem cell patent ban
Great article about leading stem cell scientists stating that the ECJ Advocate’s recommendation to ban stem cell patents will block development of stem cell-based therapeutics in Europe. Here are the highlights from the article: Scientists oppose European stem cell patent ban By Kate Kelland, Health and Science Correspondent LONDON | Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:05pm EDT LONDON (Reuters) – Research scientists hit out on Wednesday at a European Court of Justice (ECJ) case they say could block development of embryonic Read More >
