People have a lot of questions about GMOs. One of the top questions people have is about GMOs in the grocery store. But most people don’t know that much of the GMO crop production around the world goes to helping feed animals. In fact, genetically modified crops have benefited the livestock sector by helping to increase yields of the crop, having higher quality traits, and are safer for livestock to eat than feed in the past. The GMO crops that are used in animal feed and pet food most often include corn, canola, cottonseed, soybean, and potato. These crops are principally used in livestock feed rations either as an energy and/or protein source.
GMO Answers worked with the American Feed Industry Association to put together a new blog post and video on GMOs and animal feed. In the video, we answer some of the specific questions people have about feeding GMOs to animals. The blog post explores some of the misconceptions about GMOs, and the science of how various animals process food. From the blog post:
[AFIA] asked Michael Stebbins, of GMO Answers, what other misinformation is being shared regarding feed and GMOs. “Most people believe that GMOs will somehow have an adverse effect on animal’s digestive systems,” said Stebbins. “Some people also think that if they eat meat from animals that have been fed GMOs, they will turn into a GMO or that it will somehow pass through the animal into them. This is verifiably false, as that DNA does not pass through from the plant to animal to human.”

Ultimately, whatever farmers decide to feed their livestock, and whatever animal owners choose to feed their animals, all animal feed goes through a strict process of health and safety regulation so that you can be sure the animals are getting safe, nutritious, and in the case of GMO crops, affordable and sustainable, food.
